Developing Fire Management Strategies in Support of Adaptive Management at Tejon Ranch, California, April 2011 – March 2012

A Bren Masters group (Sean Baumgarten, Ashley Gilreath, Ellie Knecht, Adam Livingston, Nicole Phipps, and Andrew Prosser), advised by Conservancy Board member Dr. Frank Davis, conducted a project to investigate the fire ecology of Tejon Ranch and explore potential fire management strategies for the Conservancy’s Ranch-wide Management Plan. The extensive body of research and analysis conducted by the Bren team provided the Conservancy with important information with which to assess the need for and potential approaches managing fire and fuels on the Ranch.  Read More..

Tejon Ranch Conservancy hosts Cal-Pac Section Society for Range Management

Tejon Ranch Conservancy Secures Grant to Protect More than 62,000 Acres of Outstanding Habitat

November 18, 2010 The Tejon Ranch Conservancy today secured state funding to purchase conservation easements on more than 62,000 acres of outstanding wildlife habitat in Los Angeles and Kern counties. The $15.8 million grant from the Wildlife Conservation Board will enable the Conservancy to become the holder of some of the largest conservation easements in California. Read More...

Tejon Conservancy Symposium in Frazier Park

On October 27, 2010, the Tejon Ranch Conservancy staff hosted a first of its kind symposium in Frazier Park as a means of outreach to the local community. While the Tejon Ranch Company has long been a prominent presence in the area, the Tejon Ranch Conservancy is a new entity, formed by the Conservation and Land Use Agreement signed in 2008.  Sixty-five folks from the local area turned out to learn more about the mission and activities of the Conservancy and to ask questions and share refreshments. Boy Scouts Cleanup in Big Sycamore Canyon

On September 25 and 26th, the Boy Scout of America Troop 966 of Torrance, CA  visited Tejon Ranch and cleaned up an area in Big Sycamore Canyon on the Antelope Valley side of the ranch and built picnic tables, as part of an Eagle Scout service project. Read More...

Surveying for Purple Martins on Tejon Ranch

August 03, 2010

Purple martins, while common and widespread in the East, are relatively rare and sparsely distributed in California.  A combination of historical declines and the small population size led the California Department of Fish and Game to designate the purple martin a Species of Special Concern.  Surveys in the Tehachapi Mountains near Tejon Ranch in 2000 found over 50 pairs nesting in large Valley oaks.  To determine if the martins were also nesting in similar habitat on Tejon Ranch, an expedition was organized by the Tejon Ranch Conservancy, Audubon California, and Western Field Ornithologists to survey for purple martins in the conserved lands of Tejon Ranch.  Read more..
